Single O may be 18, but it’s been a long time since most of us staff actually were, and to some of us it’s just a blurry, distant haze. Which is why we put the call-out for 18-year-old artists and creatives across the country to submit designs that convey what turning 18 really feels like.

We wanted to give young artists a platform to show off their talent in a way no other artists could – because they are exactly that: young.
We asked them to submit designs for our 18th Birthday Blend label, with the brief ‘FREEWHEELIN’ 18’.

And, in the words of our winning artist (actual 18-year-old) Rylie Sinclair, being ‘FREEWHEELIN’ 18’ is all about “that wild and free feeling;
wind blowing through your hair and not a care in the world”. Sure, there’s some fear and trepidation. But those worries fade away as we ‘freewheel’ into an endless horizon.

With notes of sparkling fruity booze, blackcurrant, kiwi, and vodka cranberry, our coffee is perfect for filter, cold brew, all-nighters or simply riding out into the sunset.

As part of our 18th celebrations, Single O is hook-turning into Melbourne, and bringing with us something you’ll actually want – coffee! We’re pulling out all the stops for our stay at Brewtech’s collaborate space, showcasing four of our best new releases including our limited release Freewheelin’ Birthday Blend.

From the 1st September, Tap In and try a Single O coffee on newly installed batch brew taps or an expert espresso, and try our famous espresso butter on banana bread.

We’ve got heaps planned for the month at Brewtech. Come by on Friday 10th September and have a beer with us (courtesy of our local mates One Drop), check out our Freewheelin’ 18 bag art up-close (designed by Rylie Sinclair) as well as other finalists that inspired us, or just get some retail therapy done by buying a bag of coffee, or some limited edition Single O art prints and merch.

Heads up, though: We’re here for a good time, not a long time! We’re calling all you coffee fiends living/working within 5km to Collaborate Espresso, 36 Stubbs St, Kensington, from the 1st to the 30th September, 7am-3pm Monday to Friday. See you there!

From the Sunshine Coast, Rylie Sinclair’s design captures that wild and free feeling we were searching for; the prefect mix of mild trepidation and reckless abandon that comes with venturing into unknown adulthood.

A creative soul since a young age, Sinclair draws inspiration from both nature and artists such as Florence Given, Isabel Paige, and Rupi Kaur. When she isn’t making art, Rylie can often be found in the water; she’s part of the national kite foiling team and it aiming for a podium finish at the next national championships.

That said, she recognises that it’s been a tough time for a lot of young people, across Australia and the globe, with Rylie reminding us all to “just give yourself credit for everything you achieve each day and any small improvement you can make, even if that’s cooking yourself a good meal or brewing a hot cup of coffee.”

Not only do we have Riley’s art proudly sporting our FREEWHEELIN’ Birthday blend label, but we’ll also be using other young artists submissions across our Social channels and comms to help us convey what it’s like to ‘come of age’. You can check out some of the other artists we loved below:
