Gotta love the guys at 4 Pines Brewery. To dream up a project ‘Beer Mimics Food,’ where beer is designed to taste like a dish, just demonstrates their commitment to push boundaries within their craft. These guys gun to think creatively and originally. Heck they even embrace walking around Manly in banana suits…
Rewinding a little to a few months back. 4Pines approached us for the ‘Beer Mimics Food’ project, wanting to not only incorporate the synergistic partnering of coffee in beer, but take things further into the realms of a food that features coffee, captured in a beer. Twisted, ey!?
The inspiration was found on our Surry Hills café breakfast menu…the infamous ‘Banana Bread With Espresso Butter’…bottled as beer. Let’s Do This!
4Pines Head Brewer Andrew Tweddell along with our 4Pins stout loving Head Barista Sean McManus and Coffee Buyer Wendy De Jong went to work on how to translate it to beer. This of course involved field excursions to the 4Pines brewery pub in Manly.
After rounds of discussions and tastings of both coffees and beers and how the two worlds could collide with banana bread in the mix, it was decided to use a wheat style drop but instead of adding the usual grain recipe, 16 kg of crumbled banana bread were added. Banana suits were donned to aid the creative process.
For the coffee component, we selected our Cup of Excellence award winning Siteo de Serra #6 Brazilian coffee for its amazing sweetness. We approached the roast a little differently to showcase the coffee’s deep caramelly and buttery flavours while not overshadowing the other flavours in the beer.
And the result…well we sure hope it’s delicious. We’ll be sampling it at several venues over the next week and hope you can join us on the following dates below or at our special launch of the beer at our local, the Royal Albert, Commonwealth Street, Surry Hills, on Friday 25th October from 5pm.
