holy shiiibuya!

Just as well we brought the self-serve batch taps…

Coffee for 3 million people, serving from just 13 square metres, with four filter taps and a two-group espresso machine. We’ve got this. We’ve done small before. Like 2011 Surry Hills Sideshow. Here’s a quick flashback:

As a nod to that pioneering bar, Single O Shibuya Sideshow has a corten steel look bar, and equal parts espresso, with a 2 group Linea La Marzocco, and filter, with our batch on tap bar thanks to the crew at Six Simple Machines.

Some differences? Shibuya Sideshow rocks out a food menu too. And it rolls from 8am to 7pm weekdays, and 9am to 7pm weekends.

50 ORIGINS & SEASONAL SPECIALS

OG Surry customers will remember the line-up of manual brewers squeezed into Sideshow, baristas brewing and sharing their fave origin of the moment.

Same goes for Shibuya. Except batch taps have replaced the syphons, meaning tasting your way through one of 50ish origins we feature each year is a whole lot easier. As of writing, the batch taps will take you on an adventure through Burundi, Kenya and Colombia before arriving at Oasis - our Iced Oat Latte, a perfect treat to cut through the sweltering Shibuya heat.

The 2 group La Marzocco also has it’s work cut out pumping out Reservoir Flat Whites and  seasonal spros (currently, our Summer blend, Firecracker).

GIVING A SHII-BUYA – OVER 50% REUSABLE

No planet, no coffee. Shiii..

In a bid to stand against waste and keep the coffee flowing, we’ve set a goal to achieve over 50% reusable. A target we’ve aimed for in Australia since 2017 (minus the pandemic hiccup) and one we’re expanding to Japan. How? A full blown cup menu of course. Here are your options.

  1. Take a stand against waste, sip your espresso in a ceramic at our standing bar

  2. Bring your own reusable to shop the gold standard Kinto in store.

  3. Dip your toe in the reusable cup water with a Cheap N Cheerful Cup - a low cost cup that can be used time and time again.

  4. Single use. We get it, sometimes you need to. In these instances there’s an extra cup charge (as you would when you grab a plastic bag at the supermarket).

TWO FOOD CULTURES, ONE EXCITING FOOD MENU

Influenced by traditional Japanese food culture, with nods to our Aussie roots, expect takeaway treats like the Tokyo BAE Roll, which weaves Japan's favourite egg salad into a classic Aussie bacon and egg roll, complete with pickled onion. The Ham It Up Toastie features Parklet sourdough, ham, provolone, vintage cheddar cheese and a curried tomato sauce.

And it wouldn’t be a Single O menu without banana bread, espresso butter is a given.

Oh yes and there might be a special stash of Vegemite on hand. You heard it here.

THE WHERE AND WHEN?

Now you’ve caught up on the food and coffee we better spill the deets. Shibuya will be open 8am - 7pm weekdays and 9am - 7pm weekends. Rocking some long hours and combining the Aussie early morning coffee tradition with the Japanese late night cafe culture.

Where to find us? Weave your way around the Shibuya salarymen and head to the shiny new end of town here
