IT'S TIME SYDNEY
GIVING A PUCK WITH REGROUND
Giving A Puck is NSW first dedicated large-scale coffee grounds upcycling program. It came about through a meeting of the minds between Melbourne’s Reground, a social enterprise outfit who have rescued over two million kilos of coffee grounds destined for landfill, and us lot, who were passionately searching for this kind of solution in Sydney.
Single O’s mission behind Giving A Puck?
Give Reground a flying start in Sydney to work their magic. And for us and our café community? Upcycle coffee with as much care as we source, roast and brew it. Dumping the shot in landfill is no way to end the journey of a bean that’s been carefully and meticulously handled from crop to cup. Upcycling, we reckon, is a key missing part in a true specialty coffee mindset.
“As the name implies, Giving A Puck means giving a f*ck about the complete coffee quality cycle, by focussing beyond the shot, to the bean’s final journey.”EMMA COHEN - SINGLE O FOUNDER
HOW GIVING A PUCK WORKS
Dialling in for a finer look at the program, it goes like this. Grounds are collected from cafes across Sydney by Reground, for a fee that’s comparable to a café’s general waste costs. Grounds are hyper-locally repurposed into gardens where they provide a valuable resource, free of charge to the end user. Pretty pucken sweet, hey? Giving A Puck Initial Phase will see approximately 180 cafes on board, including Single O’s café client network, plus a handful of supportive roaster and café mates and Surry Hills neighbours. From Easter 2026, Giving A Puck moves into Stage 2, open Sydney-wide, ready and raring.
DRINK COFFEE AND GIVE A PUCK
Giving A Puck is stoked to have dozens of cafes on board in it’s initial stage. Show them some love, and keep an eye out round town as Giving A Puck grows its roots deep across Sydney in 2026.

WHY IT STACKS TO UPCYCLE
We love our numbers in coffee - grams in, flow rate, extraction yield and so on. These following coffee numbers though? They’re pucked! 75,000 million kilos of spent coffee grounds are emitting methane in Australian landfill each year. That’s over 2 billion coffee pucks, which, side by side, would circle Australia twice. To turn this into some good numbers, in its first 18 months, Giving A Puck will have upcycled over 3 million pucks. The benefits? Reducing environmental harm by reducing methane, and creating a valuable resource in the circular economy.

TAKE ME TO REGROUND
REGROUND'S MARK IN MELBOURNE
Reground started in East Brunswick, 2014, off the back of then-barista, Ninna Larsen, wanting to stop organic waste from going to landfill. She got busy separating out the café’s bins. Then she got real got busy doing it for others. These days, Ninna heads up Reground, which collects and upcycles coffee grounds from hundreds of Melbourne cafes, championing a circular economy. Reground had us at ‘Impact Report.’ We adopted a roaster-led model with them to ensure all grounds from our Melbourne café partners were upcycled, actively taking responsibility for their waste stream. A seed was sewn to have Reground tackle Sydney’s coffee grounds too. Many convos and door knocks later, here we are launching ‘Giving A Puck’ to see Reground on their way to making an impact in Sydney.
