cold brew guide
Cold brew is a great way of making tasty coffee. The flavours expressed in your final drink will depend on how your brew ratio, particle size and brew time all come together, so feel free to play around with these factors until you find something you love! A 60g/L ratio will be light and easy drinking, a 70g/L ratio will have a little more body & texture, and an 80g/L ratio will be quite strong and intense – perfect for mixing as a concentrate or with some milk.
A good approach to take if you’re a first timer is making several smaller brews (a 2L bucket works a treat for this!) where you change one factor. This will help you hone in on what you love!

What you’ll need :
- Hario Cold Brewer
- Grinder (if you’re getting whole beans)
- Coffee beans
- Water (filtered is preferable)
Steps:
Weigh & grind your coffee to the coarsest setting
Pop the top, sit the filter in the carafe and sling your coffee grounds in
Pour 1 litre of room temp water over the coffee grounds
Give the carafe a swirl, making sure all the coffee is submerged in the water
Put the lid on, pop it in the fridge. We’ve had the best results brewing between 18-24 hours, but feel free to experiment!
At the end of brew time, remove filter and dispose of coffee grounds to compost (the bottom cap unscrews for easy cleaning) and replace the lid
You’re ready to serve your tasty cold brew. Enjoy black, or add a splash of milk. Your cold brew will keep well in the fridge for up to 5 days
