napkin artist & so much more; random acts of art no 6: jay mccaffrey
Random acts of art next batter up is artist Jay McCaffrey, who we hotly pursued after finding her art penned on a napkin left in our café. (Jay’s a bit of a serial scribbler when out and about; at a later date, at Mary’s with Aisha & Ed, she pulled out a permanent marker and graffitied the wall with a little hamburger dude. Look out for it at your next Mary’s stint – back corner booth, ground level!)
Jay’s dressed up our bags with the 6th artwork to date and has also illustrated our latest t-shirt. We chatted to her on her art, which encompasses illustration, painting, photography, event styling, floristry … all with a balance of whimsy & strength.
BUT FIRST, YOUR FAVOURITE COFFEE?
Killerbee cold brew. (great for short trips and adventures!)
WHY A LION FOR THE RANDOM ACT OF ART?
This lion is fierce! (but in a lovable way). It’s kind of a metaphor for how Single O has become a bigger business, ready to conquer anything, but still maintains its original power & vibes. That’s something that I always experience at Single O – the people, coffee, and food are all unique, quirky, and empowering.
WHERE DID YOU DRAW IT?
I drafted it on the train home from the cafe- I had an idea of a lion screaming in my head and wanted to get what I envisioned down before I lost it.
AND THE O-BOT ILLUSTRATION FOR THE TSHIRT?
My favourite part is probably that we were able to incorporate the refractometer. The hardest part to nail was probably the shape, do we go 3D? Do we stick to a 2D design? Front on, side on? I think we smashed it in the end!
Thanks Jay, love your work & you can take to our walls, bags, tees and napkins anytime :)
