random acts of art no 10: brent smith
Artist Brent ‘Biffy’ Smith brings us our 10th Random Acts of Art bag, which features a kookaburra in a balaclava. No rapper or Pussy Riot innuendo, no coffee meaning, just sweet random subject matter, so good to know our art project is on its trackless track.
Brent first saw our mint-looking art bags in his local Albert & Moore in Freshwater & we’re excited to add coffee bags to his canvases of walls, boards and buses. Check ‘em all out below!
WE LOVE YOUR BOLD ‘N BRASH WORK! HOW’D YOU GET INTO ART & DEVELOP YOUR STYLE?
Thanks. I was a late bloomer I started when I was about 24 when I went to TAFE and then just locked my self in my room constantly painting and drawing and it all went from there.
KOOKABURRA INSPIRATION?
Based off some paintings I did a few years ago where I painted different Australian birds in balaclavas, I think most people would consider seeing a swooping magpie in a balaclava as a top ten fear.
WHEN DID YOU CREATE YOUR TRADEMARK SKULL WITH SPEED DEALER ZIG-ZAG GLASSES?
I honestly cant remember, it’s been a while, it’s definitely made its way into a few projects, it did make its way into a comic I used to write and illustrate for Surfing Life which I did love, I guess its my default that I doodle.
DO YOU WEAR SPEED DEALER SUNNIES?
Ha yes my favourite pair are some old Oakley Razors, I look like a fast freak in those bad boys.
GOT ANY SKULL ENVY?
Only that I wish that my own wasn’t so flat.
INTO COFFEE?
Very much, who isn’t?
YOUR ART TENDS TO FEATURE ON THINGS WITH WHEELS! CAN YOU SHOW US YOUR FAVOURITE BUS DESIGN?
AND HOW ABOUT ONE OF YOUR BOARDS AS WELL?
Cheers, love your work Brent!
