random acts of art no 16: creature creature
It’s time to encounter Melbourne’s Creature Creature, the deft duo behind our latest Random Acts of Art bag. Their death-defying design reimagines our No Death to Coffee project as a skeleton warrior & beast, breathing new life into our collective fight to keep the coffee industry alive.
We’re not only big fans of their work but also their community-minded ethos. Read on below & get to know this dynamo pair.
FIRST UP, THE IMPORTANT STUFF. HOW DO YOU TAKE YOUR COFFEE?
Two soy flat whites! But we would honestly drink coffee in any form, love filter & cold brew.
DO YOU HAVE ANY CONNECTION TO SINGLE O?
We had not heard of Single O before being contacted as we are from Melbourne & don’t know much outside our bubble! But next time we are in Sydney it will be top priority to visit, as coffee lovers we love what you are doing, especially your sustainability stance. Recently, we were in Tokyo & were lucky enough to visit your Japan outpost & meet the team & attend a cupping session. It was so cool for all our passions to collide in this way: art, coffee & travel.
FOR THE UNINITIATED, CAN YOU GIVE US THE WHO, WHAT, WHERE & WHEN OF CREATURE CREATURE?
Creature Creature consists of Ambrose Rehorek & Chanel Tang. Since meeting at University we decided to work together on our artistic practice under one name, as our creative connection & our enthusiasm for collaborating was so strong. Since then we have focused on exhibiting art, murals & various commercial projects.
WHAT’S THE BACKGROUND STORY ON THE CREATURE YOU’VE CREATED FOR OUR RANDOM ACTS OF ART PROJECT?
Our illustration features a beast & skeleton, symbols of the warrior spirt & a combatant energy we wanted to convey from this design. We wanted to show this fight for sustainability in a very graphic & striking way.
OUR NO DEATH TO COFFEE SHIELD APPEARS IN THIS WORK. THIS IS ALL ABOUT HELPING KEEP THE COFFEE INDUSTRY ALIVE. ARE THERE ANY CAUSES YOU’RE PASSIONATE ABOUT FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT FOR?
As a partnership, we want to use our art to promote & advocate the philosophy of collaboration not just artistically, but in all aspects of society. We are strong believers of working together, community & a less ego-centric culture.
WAS YOUR PROCESS FOR CREATING THIS WORK ANY DIFFERENT THAN USUAL? IF SO HOW?
When creating work we seem to follow a very routine process, always start with a conversation, then ideas, compositions, sketches until the final production. For this particular work the dimensions & limited colour is different from our usual work but ultimately we enjoy these restrictions as it forces us to create something unique even within our own style.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS & BLUNDERS OF BEING A DUO?
Being part of a team is so beneficial especially when talking about the process of creation as mentioned above. You always have someone to bounce ideas off throughout. A challenge of working as a duo is always remaining flexible & compromising to the other, so you need a lot of trust.
HOW DO YOU STAY INSPIRED?
We ingest a lot of visual culture, anything around us from nature, films, packaging design, to local art & museums. We are always seeking inspiration & sharing it with each other so in this way it always builds.
WHO SHOULD WE WORK WITH NEXT?
Can’t help but recommend a bestie of ours Jason Parker who is renowned for his oil painting skills but is making all the right moves with his graphic style with his new clothing label Doom and Gloom.
