random acts of art no 19: isaiah hill
A visual cacophony of wicked stereotypes and unique unpleasantness portrays an evil plastic world through the eyes of Northern Beaches based illustrator Isaiah Hill.
Isaiah is a close friend of the ‘O’ family. By day he makes coffee for guests of Balmoral Boathouse & by night he side hustles on a range of different illustrative projects. Without doubt his edgy illo conveys our feelings toward the subject perfectly & sums up every reason for our mission to change the way we do things as a business. Awesome work Isaiah, take a mo to meet him below.
FIRST UP, WHAT’S YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH COFFEE?
I’ve been working as a barista for the past 6 years, loved every single minute of it!
DO YOU HAVE ANY CONNECTION TO SINGLE O? AND IF SO, WHAT IS IT?
I’ve been working with Single O coffee the past 3 years through The Boathouse. Love your coffee, love your vibe!
YOU’RE IN AN ELEVATOR & YOU NEED TO DESCRIBE YOUR ILLUSTRATION STYLE BEFORE WE REACH OUR FLOOR… AND GO!
Quirky, surreal, doodley, symbolic, line work
IF YOU COULD MEET & ILLUSTRATE ONE PERSON WHO WOULD IT BE?
I think Keith Haring, he’s such a big influence for me!
HOW’D YOU GET INTO DRAWING & IS IT YOUR MAIN GIG?
I’ve been drawing/doodling since I was in primary school. I wasn’t the academic type so scribbling in textbooks was my escape from boredom. Over time my style developed and when I went solo travelling around Eastern Europe I started to expand my style and draw more conceptually. Currently drawing is a side hustle for me, but through this project I have realised how much I want to make a full time gig!
WAS YOUR PROCESS FOR CREATING THIS WORK ANY DIFFERENT THAN USUAL? IF SO HOW?
I packed a lot more detail into this work then usual. I wanted to create this bag design into a contrasty where’s Wally style mess of madness!
THE THEME OF THE BAG IS ‘EVIL PLASTIC’ – WHAT’S ONE OTHER THING IN THE WORLD YOU’D PUT UNDER THE ‘EVIL’ THEME?
Haha probably “death”.. I mean that’s as evil as you can get right?
THIS DRAWING IS SUPER DETAILED, WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE SECTION & WHY?
To be honest, probably the devil dude holding the chain connected to the bag. It’s hard to choose a part though, I’m just stoked how it came out, love the way it pops with colour!
IF YOU WEREN’T DRAWING WHAT CAREER DO YOU RECKON YOU’D HAVE?
DEFINITELY an astronaut.. haha, jokes…
I think something creative.. a photographer, videographer, music producer, anything that involves being creative, I’m in.
HOW DO YOU STAY INSPIRED?
Music, Music anddddd music. It puts me in a state where I can be one with my process, envision the idea, and make it happen.
