random acts of art no 9: captain pipe
It’s all here on our Random Acts of Art #9 coffee bag by the way-talented Neil McCann, aka Captain Pipe – myths, realities, beasts, a big … oh look, you’ll have to have a squiz at the bag for yourselves. A big thanks to Neil for this wicked little number & for sharing some words below. And thanks to Lisa, our stellar York St CBD manager who put us in touch when Neil was frequenting the café last year.
Over to your art in a moment but quickly first…
HOW’D YOU COME ACROSS SINGLE O?
I think I first came across you in Surry Hills about 10 years ago, beautiful coffee, lovely people … am I creeping too much?
COFFEE ORDER?
I’m quite dull as a coffee order. Cappuccino with one sugar … it’s exotic right. Froth and chocolate. I would have a manbabyccino if I could , just a big cup when I’m feeling anxious and overwhelmed in the afternoon.
Now onto..
WE LOVE YOUR ART! TELL US ABOUT IT! WHO ARE THESE BEASTS AND BEINGS ON OUR COFFEE BAG…
The beings/beanings on the bag are about consciousness and how we generate our own myths and realities.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR NIGHT VISIONS?
The Night Visions installation for Art Month came out of a set of Tarot cards I made. I called the cards Artot, they came with a set of instructions about how to read the future, or at the very least improve your ability to make things up.
COULD WE HAVE A SQUIZ AT ONE OF YOUR ANIMATIONS?
The animation I’m working on at the moment is about extending the drawings into a longer form, hopefully a feature film.
WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT- CONCEPT OR EXECUTION?
The concept evolves over time, it’s a bit of a back and forth with the execution of the concept.
WHY THE NAME ‘CAPTAIN PIPE?’
It’s a fluid process- hence Captain Pipe, I’m just a vessel for the fluids!
