LEARN: HOME-BREW GUIDE FOR OUR BLENDS
If you’re already clued up on why it’s crucial to use a brew recipe, jump to the recipe section here
Want to nail your home-made coffee? No need to kidnap your fave barista. We’ve put together this brew guide to take your home coffee game to the next level.
Put simply, great coffee depends on three things:
- How good your beans are
- Your method
- Your recipe
Tick, tick, tick. Onto the method to this caffeinated madness.
ESPRESSO IS WHERE TO START (YOUR DAY & YOUR HOME BREWIN’)
There’s a whole brew-rainbow of methods available & you’ll find a pot of liquid gold at the end of most of them BUT when it comes to blends, it’s best to start with espresso & experiment from there. Our blend babies were crafted with the body & flavour of espresso in mind, each pairing with milk in their own delicious ways.
THE RECIPE… AKA THE KEY TO GREAT COFFEE
A recipe is the master key to unlocking a delicious coffee that’s complex, balanced & showcases the best aroma & flavours of your coffee (different coffees have different recipes). It helps you avoid coffee pitfalls, like the sour or bitter cups you might find in a servo. Nope to that.
In a commercial setting we recommend a full recipe (exact weights & timing for extraction) cause we know the gear the baristas are working with, but when it comes to the home, machines will vary so our trialled & tested ratio will be your brew BFF.
RATIO: THE GOLDEN RULE OF THUMB
There are two key inputs in a home context:
#1 – Dose (ground coffee)
#2 – Yield (the combined water & coffee, i.e. the shot)
It’s these two factors that’ll determine your cup’s strength, mouthfeel & taste more than anything else.
Another consideration – though less important – is time i.e. how long it takes for your shot to extract. We’d say you should be aiming for between 20-30 secs, but this will vary depending on your machine.
TRUST YOUR TASTE
Lean into your tastebuds & learn to trust your palate. Quite often, you’ll find yourself loving a particular coffee because you’ve happened upon the perfect brew ratio for your home machine. But you don’t have to leave it to chance. Follow our recipe below to control the ratio & you’ll be making your coffee bang on every time.
GET SOME SCALES.
You’re gonna need scales to nail your ratios. We may be coffee crazed & a bit rowdy, but we don’t muck around on this point. You can grab a reliable mid-range set here – they’re perfect for the home brewer.
SINGLE O BLEND RATIOS FOR HOME
We’ve set-up a nifty calculator here so you can punch in your figures & get your out-shot weight easy.
Ratio – 1g : 2.4g
Ratio – 1g : 2.1g
Ratio – 1g : 1.85g
Ratio – 1g : 1.75g
Tip: You can round up to the nearest gram, or as close to as you can. And remember the proof is in the tasting & the tweaking.
